Prāṇa in Motion
Seminar on the 5 Vāyus of Yoga with Monica
Prāṇa is the force that keeps you alive.
It is not just the breath you feel: it is the energy that makes your heart beat, digests your food, moves your arms, enables you to think and listen. Without Prāṇa, nothing works. In Yoga, working on Prāṇa means working on life itself.
Prāṇa is divided into 5 main movements, called Vāyu (literally ‘winds’). Each has a specific name and function:
. Prāṇa (in the chest, governs inhalation, the voice, and reception)
. Apāna (in the lower abdomen, governs elimination, grounding, release)
. Samāna (in the abdomen, governs digestion, assimilation, balance);
. Udāna (in the throat and head, governs expression, growth, elevation);
. Vyāna (throughout the body, governs circulation, connection, movement).
When these five movements are in balance, you feel full of vitality, centred and clear-minded. When they become scattered or blocked, fatigue, confusion and tension set in.
‘yathā samrāḍ evādhikṛtān viniyunkte…
evam evaiṣa prāṇa itarān prāṇān
pṛthak pṛthag eva sannidhatte’
Praśna Upaniṣad, III.4
‘Just as an emperor assigns tasks to his officials, so the principal Prāṇa distributes the other prāṇas, each to its proper place.’
Prāṇa is the director. The five Vāyu are the actors. Understanding them means learning to direct energy rather than being at the mercy of its imbalances.
This seminar is a practical experience: not abstract theory, but concrete tools for sensing Prāṇa in the body, recognising its movements and learning to balance them through asanas, pranayama and meditation.
